Financial stress can lead to a sense of hopelessness, strained relationships, feelings of being trapped, and a surrender to creditors. I think about the single mom I met through the Extra Mile program; she came in facing numerous challenges. The pain associated with her finances made it hard for her to even look at them.
We started slowly, breaking financial management down into manageable steps. By combining several small actions, we developed a plan that empowered her to view her situation as a whole and to make decisions that fostered stability and peace. She is now taking steps to boost her income and is intentionally directing every dollar she earns, gaining a sense of control over her finances.
She was the first graduate of NWA Extra Mile, which launched two years ago, and I'm happy to share that she continues to apply the skills she learned through coaching.
By contributing to NWA 2026 Extra Mile, you are funding a transformative 16-week coaching program for participants. Throughout this journey, they receive financial incentives totaling $620 as they complete their assignments. Achieving lasting change requires this level of commitment, and your generous support enables us to sustain this incentive-based coaching approach.
The graph illustrates that development is the most prolonged and sustained effort in helping individuals. This is the primary focus of Extra Mile. Often, people face crises—symbolized by the lightning bolt—such as natural disasters, job loss, or illness. These situations typically require immediate relief, including shelter, food, and essential services.
Following this initial phase, rehabilitation is necessary. This involves reconstructing the essential structures that provide basic services, such as repairing homes, securing employment, and establishing living arrangements, including transportation.
The final stage is development, where support is directed towards enhancing individuals' living situations. While they may have the necessary structures in place, there’s room for better management and long-term improvement planning. This stage demands new disciplines, habits, and significant life changes. As we all know, real change is challenging, which is why development requires intensive, long-term effort to cultivate new habits and achieve new goals.
At Extra Mile, this growth occurs within a relational context that encourages participants to take specific steps and guides them in making wise daily choices for a better future. Our focus is on financial management. Together, we analyze participants' spending habits and begin crafting a personalized spending plan based on those habits.
Throughout this process, we explore the individual's history, values, and goals. We also review materials on the fundamental principles of financial management and the financial institutions they are likely to encounter. As our weekly meetings progress, we work towards building a spending plan that enhances their financial situation and aligns with their core values and responsible resource management.
We aim for every Extra Mile graduate to regularly complete a monthly balance sheet, ensuring all their money is accounted for and allocated towards their intended goals. As participants engage in this process, they often see their debts decrease, savings increase, stress levels lower, and charitable contributions rise. This enables them to utilize their finances not only for personal strength but also as a means to support others in their community.
