Impacts of Gezani and response
Mid-February brought an urgent shift in our work when Cyclone Gezani devastated Toamasina, Madagascar, leaving 250,000 people in need. Tens of thousands of homes were damaged or completely destroyed. There is no electricity or running water.
The only facility with a functioning operating room is a small private hospital where our friend Dr. Fabruce is currently the head surgeon. He and his small team are swamped with patients. They performed fifteen C-sections in 24 hours—some by headlamp when the generator failed. The situation is desperate. Dr. Fabruce’s apartment, located on the top floor of the hospital, also had its roof ripped off during the storm, ruining many of their possessions.
We are also coming alongside 25 local colleagues in the city who, despite damage to many of their own homes and businesses, are working tirelessly to help the most vulnerable in their community begin rebuilding.
At NET Development Inc., we partner with donors to support community-led solutions that create lasting impact. Through innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and strong local engagement, we work to address the root causes of social, economic, and environmental challenges.
We are tracking real-time needs and have gone into relief coordination mode. We have launched a disaster relief fund on our website, with 100% of donations going directly to recovery.
