I'm a former Marine and a singer-song writer, but I'm also a bicultural and migrant child. I migrated to the U.S. when I was 7yrs old, and I understand the importance of education and the presence of our parents in the school system. For migrant parents, it is very hard to be part of the school system because of many struggles like not speaking English or not having enough support to learn how to advocate for their children. Being informed on how the school system works is very important, in my case my parents were not informed, and I grew up thinking College was not an option for me. Now, I understand that informing and preparing parents on time fills a gap that will lead to having more immigrant children go to college.

(SpaSoy un una veterana de los Marines y cantautora, pero también soy bicultural y migrante. Émigré a los EE. UU. cuando tenía 7 años y entiendo la importancia de la educación y la presencia de nuestros padres en el sistema escolar. Para los padres inmigrantes, es muy difícil ser parte del sistema escolar debido a muchas dificultades, como no hablar inglés o no tener suficiente apoyo e informacion para aprender a hablar por sus hijos. Estar informado sobre cómo funciona el sistema escolar es muy importante, en mi caso mis padres no estaban informados y crecí pensando que la universidad no era una opción para mí. Ahora entiendo que informar y preparar a los padres a tiempo llena un vacío en la sociedad que llevará a que más niños inmigrantes vayan a la universidad.

Why OneCommunity?/ Porque OneCommunity?

The first time I walked into a Parents Taking Leadership in Action (PTLA) class, it was like love at first sight. As a child, I always wished for my parents to have that opportunity and encouragement to be part of my school activities and award ceremonies. It was not possible because they had to work from dawn until dusk in the California fields because they didn't speak English and that was the only job they could do.

Furthermore, I walked to the room that completely took part of my heart, the Kids Club room. The happy faces smiling and working in arts and crafts activities. I imagined the happiness of knowing their parents were in their school learning English. They were, I could only imagine it because I didn't have that experience growing up . Now I want that experience for all the children of immigrant parents. I decided to work for OneCommunity and give my best to this cause and mission. I longed for a place to put in action all the skills that I've attained in the military as an administrator and in the music business. Now my goal is to help OneCommunity beyond my limits because when you love what you do times does not exist, and it will never feel like a job.

La primera vez que entré a una clase de Padres Toman  Liderazgo en Acción (PTLA), fue como amor a primera vista. De niña, siempre deseé que mis padres tuvieran esa oportunidad y aliento para ser parte de mis actividades escolares y ceremonias de entrega de certificados. Lamentablemente no fue posible porque tenían que trabajar desde el amanecer hasta el anochecer en los campos de California  porque no hablaban inglés y ese era el único trabajo que podían hacer. 

Despues, caminé hacia el salon del Club de niños y al verlos trabajando en actividades y leyendo esa imagen gano por completo mi corazón. Cuando vi las caras felices sonriendo y trabajando en actividades de artes manuales me imaginé la felicidad de saber que sus padres estaban en su escuela aprendiendo inglés. Solo podía imaginarlo porque no tuve esa experiencia mientras yo crecía. Ahora quiero esa experiencia para todos los hijos de padres inmigrantes en el Noroeste de Arkansas. 

Decidí trabajar para OneCommunity y dar lo mejor de mí a esta causa y misión poniendo en pausa temporal mi propio negocio y bajar un poco en las presentaciones en mi carrera musical. Anhelaba un lugar con una mision del alma para poner en práctica todas las habilidades que había adquirido en el ejército como administradora y en el negocio de la música. Ahora mi objetivo es ayudar a OneCommunity más allá de mis límites porque esta mision llena mi corazon y nunca la he sentire como trabajo. Soy una hacedora de bien desde que soy niña y continuare este camino hasta que me sea posible.
