Building Real-Time Community Safety Systems in Northwest Arkansas

On April 9 from 8 AM – 8 PM, Northwest Arkansas will come together for NWA Gives, a powerful day of generosity that strengthens the organizations working every day to protect lives and build healthier communities.

Checkpoint Initiative exists to meet people in the moments before crisis becomes tragedy.

Across Arkansas, families continue to face the realities of overdose, domestic instability, housing insecurity, mental health crisis, and gaps in emergency support. Many individuals fall through the cracks not because they don’t want help but because help does not arrive early enough.

Checkpoint is building a new model of prevention.

Through community partnerships, safety training, and real-time crisis support technology, we are creating systems that help individuals stay alive, stabilize, and reconnect with support before situations escalate.

The Reality in Our Region

Northwest Arkansas is growing rapidly, but many safety and recovery resources remain fragmented or difficult to access in moments of urgency.

Transportation barriers, stigma, financial hardship, and rural geography all contribute to delayed intervention, often with life-altering consequences.

Local service providers work tirelessly to respond after crisis occurs.
Checkpoint’s mission is to strengthen the front line of prevention.

What We Are Building

Checkpoint Initiative is developing a community-based safety network that includes:

• overdose prevention education and access point expansion
• crisis stabilization tools and response guidance
• partnerships with local ministries, advocates, and service providers
• early-intervention safety technology designed to support individuals in real time
• training and awareness programs that empower communities to act

What We’ve Already Done

Checkpoint is not just an idea. It’s already active in the community.

• 800+ Narcan doses distributed
• 12+ access points created or supported
• 1,050+ test strips distributed
• 5+ individuals connected to peer support specialists
• community supply distribution including safety kits
• direct outreach and real-world support to individuals in need

* partnered with local shops to distribute rescue kits and test strips at the point of use

This work is already happening. NWA Gives allows us to expand it.

Our goal is simple but urgent:
reduce preventable harm and save lives through earlier connection to safety.

Our NWA Gives Goal

This year, we are working to raise $10,000 to expand our life-saving capacity across the region.

Funds raised will support:

• transportation to reach individuals, deliver supplies, and expand access points in real time
• expansion of safety kits and access points in rural and underserved areas
• development support to stabilize the Checkpoint crisis-support app prototype
• outreach materials and training resources for community partners

Each of these investments directly increases the number of people we can reach before crisis becomes irreversible.

Why Prevention Changes Everything

When intervention happens earlier, communities experience:

• fewer overdose deaths
• reduced strain on emergency systems
• safer families and healthier homes
• stronger recovery outcomes
• increased community resilience
• restored hope for individuals who feel unseen

Prevention is not just compassionate, it is practical, measurable, and transformative.

Be Part of the Front Line

Checkpoint Initiative is still in an early growth phase, which means community support now has an outsized impact on how quickly we can scale life-saving systems across Northwest Arkansas.
